Premier Simpson Commends Canada’s Commitment to Arctic Security, Calls for Continued Investment in the North

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to the Government of Canada’s announcement of new military investments in the North:

“I want to thank Minister Blair and the Government of Canada for their continued commitment to Arctic security. Expanding the Canadian Armed Forces’ presence at the Forward Operating Locations in Iqaluit, Inuvik, and Yellowknife strengthens Canada’s strategic presence in the Arctic and reinforces its commitment to supporting Arctic and Northern communities.

The expansion of the military’s footprint and ongoing work to establish new operational hubs are important steps toward ensuring the North remains secure, resilient, and prepared for future challenges.

I also want to recognize the dedicated military personnel, including the Canadian Rangers, who serve across our territory. Their presence strengthens our communities, enhances emergency response capacity, and ensures Canada remains engaged in the Arctic at a time of growing global interest in the region.

For generations, Indigenous peoples and other Northerners have been the frontline stewards of Canada’s Arctic. Sovereignty is not just a concept—it is something we assert every day by living and working here, building strong and sustainable communities, and driving economic stability through resource development, which operates year-round and is vital to the Northern economy.

Looking ahead, ensuring long-term Arctic security and economic stability will require sustained investment in the North. We look forward to working with Canada to build on these commitments—investing in critical infrastructure, energy security, resource development, and access to global markets to strengthen our sovereignty and enhance the quality of life for Northerners.”
