NU Government: $4 Million in COVID-19 Support for Municipalities

13 January 2022

The Government of Nunavut has allocated an additional $4 million to provide financial relief for municipalities. The funds will ensure Nunavut’s municipalities can continue to provide critical services to Nunavummiut in addition to assisting with operational costs associated with COVID-19 response efforts.

In the past two years Nunavut’s municipalities have played an essential role in preventing and minimizing the spread of COVID-19 in our territory. Municipal resources are stretched as Nunavut enters the second year of this pandemic.

This additional investment will help ensure municipalities have the financial resources to maintain critical services as well as additional COVID-19 supports without compromising their financial status.

Each municipal corporation will have the option to assign funding toward the COVID-19 prevention, response and/or recovery priorities identified in their community. Eligible expenditures include, purchase of materials and supplies, wages, communication and outreach material, and local program development.

Funding allocation for each community will be scaled based on community size and the scope of the municipal operations.
