Rural nutrition program, mobile therapeutic unit among programs affected
Ava Jaranowska, a three-year-old autistic and non-verbal child who is a Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation citizen in the Yukon, has been without speech-language pathology services since February.
It’s a serious concern for Jaranowska’s grandmother, Kim Rumley, who said the girl’s previous speech language pathologist called this a critical time for her speech development.
Before February, the weekly appointments, which cost about $150 each, were partially covered by the federal government through Jordan’s Principle. Now, Rumley said she is unsure whether the funding is temporarily caught up in “political ping-pong.”
