Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 10, 2025

The Department of Health would like to remind Nunavummiut that March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer, its risk factors, and the importance of early detection.

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancers in Nunavut, but it is preventable and treatable when caught early. Regular screening is the most effective way to prevent deaths from colorectal cancer. By catching the disease early – before symptoms arise –there is a better chance to treat it effectively and make positive lifestyle changes for improved health.

The Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a simple, non-invasive test that detects hidden blood in the stool, a potential early sign of colorectal cancer. A 2022 screening pilot in Gjoa Haven, Arviat, and Pond Inlet highlighted the importance of early detection, referrals, and timely follow-up care.

Starting in spring 2025, the Department of Health will expand screening to Clyde River, Kimmirut, Qikiqtarjuaq and Rankin Inlet, with more communities to follow as part of the territory-wide scale-up.

FIT testing is recommended every two years for individuals aged 50-74 at average risk. Eligible residents will receive an invitation and can pick up a free FIT kit at their health centre.

For more information, visit your health centre and speak with your healthcare provider. You can also contact the Cancer Screening Program by calling 867-975-5943 or emailing CancerScreening@gov.nu.ca. Additional information is available on our the Cancer Screening webpage.

Let’s work together to raise awareness and prevent colorectal cancer in our communities. Early detection can save lives.
