Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq language month to return in February 2026
April 9, 2025
Starting Nunavut Day – and ending September 19, 2025, the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Culture & Heritage will be promoting the Inuktut language through a series of events and activities culminating in next year’s celebration of Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq language month in February 2026.
Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq has grown significantly since it was first launched as “Language Week” in 2000. It expanded to two weeks in 2015 and became a month-long celebration in 2016. Initially held in February (Naliqqaittuq), the event moved to April (Nasairvik) in 2023 and 2024, featuring themes centered on the Qulliq and Nattiq.
Nunavut is a unique linguistic space within Canada, with three official languages: Inuktut, English, and French. It is the only jurisdiction where the majority language, Inuktut, is not English or French.
Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq promotes the importance, history and diversity of Inuktut in the territory. Nunavummiut are encouraged to celebrate Inuktut every day through stories, games and by joining the conversation on social media using the hashtag #Quviasuutiqarniq.
