Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“National Tourism Week is celebrated from April 7 to 11 this year and the Yukon is proud to join the rest of Canada in recognizing the importance of tourism.

“Now in its 15th year, this initiative led by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada highlights the significance of travel and tourism. Travel is still the top non-essential expense worldwide.

“This year’s theme is Canada: Powered by Tourism. This theme highlights the many positive impacts tourism organizations, businesses and other partners make to our economy, culture and overall wellbeing. Tourism drives economic growth and supports businesses of all sizes.

“Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Yukon to experience our beautiful wilderness, rich history and unique culture and more and more to participate in sporting events. These visitors fly with our airlines, explore our communities and special places, stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, attend our festivals and events and purchase goods and services from our local businesses. In 2024, gross business revenue attributed to tourism reached an estimated record high of $575 million. It is estimated that tourism contributes close to 5 per cent of the Yukon’s annual gross domestic product.

“Beyond its economic impact, tourism also plays a vital role in supporting and promoting our diverse cultures and unique heritage. Many of the visitors who come to the Yukon are interested in learning about Yukon First Nations culture, tasting our local food and drink and celebrating with us through our vibrant arts and music scene. Sharing our stories preserves our heritage and fosters cultural exchange.

“Another special draw of the Yukon is the people working in the tourism sector. Thank you to all the enthusiastic, hardworking and dedicated individuals who champion the territory and showcase the natural beauty and cultural diversity of our home. The Government of Yukon truly appreciates the sector’s contribution to building thriving communities and a prosperous territory in support of the goals of the Yukon Tourism Development Strategy.

“Tourism in the Yukon is on the rise with 2024 indicators showing growth across the board and into our shoulder seasons compared to past years.

“Securing funding for the new Yukon Gathering Place is great news. This convention centre will allow Whitehorse to host international conferences, trade shows and community events, strengthening its position as a key destination in Canada and beyond. I look forward to the opportunities this will create for the tourism industry and the territory as a whole.

“Given current global uncertainties, it’s important to remember that our travel choices matter. This year, we expect more Canadians to explore their own country and local destinations. We’re excited to welcome them to the Yukon and showcase all we have to offer and we also look forward to welcoming our friends and neighbours from Alaska.

“Please join me in celebrating the Yukon tourism sector and best wishes to all tourism operators and businesses for a successful summer season!”
