(Alta-Fatal-Child)

A nine-year-old girl was killed and two other children have been badly hurt in a crash southeast of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The R-C-M-P say the girl was a passenger in a car that was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer yesterday at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 41 near Dunmore.

The other children, both age 12, and the female driver of the car suffered critical injuries.

The truck driver was not injured and there was no immediate word on the cause of the crash. (The Canadian Press)

(Alta-Body-River)

R-C-M-P in Alberta say they believe a body that was found in the Lesser Slave River over the weekend is a woman who was reported missing earlier this month.

Twenty-one-year-old Nicole Robar was last seen in Slave Lake on July 10th.

Police say the identity won’t be confirmed until an autopsy today, and that the case remains under investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the remains — or anyone who may have had contact with Robar after July 8th — to contact them. (The Canadian Press)

(CRIME-Mba-Murder)

A 16-year-old in Manitoba has been charged with first-degree murder in a death that happened on the Long Plain First Nation.

R-C-M-P said yesterday that the teen was located after a warrant was issued.

He’s now in police custody.

Police haven’t revealed further details and say they won’t be releasing the victim’s name. (The Canadian Press)

(Mba-Folklorama-Ghana)

A group of men who entered Canada by foot near Emerson, Manitoba, have been circulating a petition at Winnipeg’s annual multicultural festival calling for L-G-B-T-Q rights in Ghana.

Sulemana Abdulai, a bisexual man who fled persecution in Ghana, says help is needed from the Canadian government.

The group decided they could raise awareness of the issue during Folklorama, and have been wearing shirts that say “Ghana Pavilion.”

Folklorama doesn’t allow politics into its cultural events so Abdulai says he and the other activists are sticking to public sidewalks outside pavilions. (Winnipeg Free Press)

(WestJet-Discount-Base)

A spokeswoman for WestJet says its new, low-cost airline may not be based in Calgary.

Lauren Stewart says WestJet is considering locations that would allow it to take advantage of lower-cost markets.

The airline has said the announcement of its new airline will be delayed until next summer.

Stewart says WestJet is still working on elements related to the launch — namely the organizational structure, routes, schedules, services and branding. (Global)

(Regina-Smoking-Ex)

A spokesperson for the Regina Exhibition Association says they worked with police to educate people about their designated smoking areas, rather than immediately hand out fines.

For the first time, as per Regina’s new smoking bylaw, attendees at the Queen City Ex were not allowed to smoke on the grounds.

Paula Kohl with the association says that since the fair has been around for about 130 years, it was tough for some.

One man admitted he sneaked behind rides to light up because he couldn’t locate the appropriate spot to do so. (CJME)

(Saskatoon-Quilts)

The Canadian Quilters’ Association has dropped off a large bundle of quilts at Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon.

The quilts are just some of the one thousand quilts the association made to deliver to Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada.

Ronald McDonald Houses helps house families whose children need care in hospital.

Tammy Forrester, executive director of the Saskatoon house, says the quilts are especially welcome right now because the house is often close to full during summer. (CJWW)
