NTI Launches Third Inuktuuqta! Inuktut Writing Prize
(June 19, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) In advance of National Indigenous People’s Day, NTI President Aluki Kotierk is pleased to launch the third iteration of the Inuktuuqta! Inuktut Writing Prize.
Inuktuuqta! will award one Nunavut Inuit author a grand prize of $80,000 and supports to continue their writing over the year, including a residency and mentorship opportunity to develop their material into a full-length book. Four additional prizes will be awarded for $10,000, $5000, $3000, and $2000. Nunavut Tunngavik Foundation (NTF) will work with the winning authors to complete and publish their works.
“Supporting and encouraging writers to create works in Inuktut will strengthen and promote our language. Whether you write in a dialect of Inuinnaqtun or Inuktitut, NTI wants to see your writing and we want readers today and, in the future, to be able to enjoy your creations in Inuktut.” says NTI President Aluki Kotierk.
Since it’s inception in 2020, NTI has awarded $200,000.00 in prizes to emerging Inuit authors. Past recipients include Looee Arreak, and Susan Tigullaraq.
Submissions are open until September 22, 2024 at midnight local time. All creative ideas are welcome, in any of Nunavut’s Inuktut languages and in the author’s preferred writing style. Nunavut Inuit over the age of 18 are eligible. Submissions must be unpublished, original stories, or collection of short stories and poems. The application form and additional information are available on NTI’s website. Write to inuktuuqta@tunngavik.com for further information.
The winner will be announced on December 4, 2024 at an Inuktuuqta! Gala at the Aqsarniit Hotel in Iqaluit.
