Notice of the establishment of the Hamlet of Tsiigehtchic
July 8, 2024
The community of Tsiigehtchic was formally established as a Hamlet effective July 1, 2024.
On May 23, 2023, 76% of voters in Tsiigehtchic supported changing the status of the Charter Community Government of Tsiigehtchic to a Hamlet.
The status change results in two distinct and separate government structures: a Hamlet Council and a band council. As a Hamlet, the authority and operations of the community government are more easily defined and separated, and all residents who are eligible to vote are able to vote and/or run for Mayor and Councillor positions.
The first election of a new Mayor and Council will be held on December 9, 2024 in accordance with the Local Authorities Elections Act. The Hamlet Council will be comprised of one Mayor and eight Councillors who will hold office for two years.
In the meantime, Grant Scott will continue as Administrator for the Hamlet to support the community during this transitionary period. In his role he will continue to oversee the operations of the community government until the term of the newly-elected Council begins January 6, 2025.
