Iqaluit, NU (June 5, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut and the Nunavut Teachers’ Association (NTA) announce the formal ratification of a new collective agreement following a collaborative negotiation process.
The new agreement, effective from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, outlines several key provisions aimed at strengthening teacher recruitment, retention and supporting educational excellence in Nunavut. Notable highlights include a 9% wage increase effective July 1, 2025; a 3% wage increase effective July 1, 2026, and 3% wage increase effective July 1, 2027, to ensure competitive compensation. Nunavut teachers will now also be eligible for a Continuous Service Bonus in line with the rest of the Government of Nunavut employees to assist in recognizing their valuable service to educational outcomes. Additionally, the agreement significantly enhances the Inuktut Language Allowance to promote the critical role educators play in language revitalization and cultural preservation.
“The Government of Nunavut recognizes the professionalism and dedication of the Nunavut Teachers’ Association and the commitment of educators across the territory to building a resilient, high-quality learning environment for all students,” said Minister of Human Resources David Akeeagok. “The successful ratification of this agreement is an important step forward and reflects our shared commitment to supporting teachers and, in turn, strengthening education in Nunavut.”
“This agreement reflects our sincere appreciation for the teachers who guide and inspire Nunavut’s students every day. By strengthening compensation, enhancing language support, and recognizing long-term service, we’re investing in the people at the heart of our schools,” said Minister of Education Pamela Hakongak Gross. “Our teachers play a vital role in delivering inclusive, culturally grounded education, and this agreement helps ensure they have the support they need for continued success.”
“Our teachers are the foundation of our education system as they shape the future of communities and the next generation of leaders, and the ratification of this agreement is a recognition of our mutual respect for their role,” said Justin Matchett, President of the Nunavut Teachers’ Association. “The agreement recognizes the unique challenges our educators face and provides them with the support they need to continue delivering quality education to students across the territory.”
The ratification of the new collective agreement marks a significant step in working collaboratively to enhance education and address the needs of Nunavut’s education system.
