KIA is pleased to announce the signing of a 2.48M multi-year Contribution Agreement between KIA and the Baker Lake Daycare. The funding partnership supports the final phases of design and construction of the New Baker Lake Daycare Centre.

The Contribution Agreement totaling $2,482,503 between KIA and Baker Lake Daycare will span across two fiscal years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026. The project is funded by KIA and Government of Nunavut for the final phases of the new building design and construction. The construction of the new building is scheduled to commence in the Summer of 2025. This project has a total budget of 6.35M over three years.

BACKGROUND

In the 2021-2022 year the previous Baker Lake Daycare building experienced a fire that rendered the building inoperable. It was determined to be an infeasible use of capital funds to repair the damaged building due to age, building condition, cost, and community benefit. Baker Lake Daycare moved to renting a local multiuse facility as a temporary solution. The Baker Lake Daycare Society noticed the long-term need for a new daycare centre and in 2021 initiated the project. In 2023 KIA invested nearly a million dollars towards the early stages of project development. The Baker Lake Daycare, along with their funding partners, have been working diligently since the fire incident to replace the derelict building to exceed Territorial standards and meet the needs of their growing community and childcare needs.

As of February 2025, Baker Lake Daycare is currently under the final design and permitting phase of the New Daycare building. The new building will nearly double the capacity of the existing daycare space. The new building and lot significantly increase space for an outdoor play area, drop-off/pick-up location, and parking. Site preparation works commenced in the 2024 construction season to ensure the lot where the new building is to be located is ready for the initial construction phase to commence in the 2025-2026 construction season. Baker Lake Daycare aims to have the new building operational by 2026-2027 fiscal year.

Baker Lake Daycare Management and Board of Directors have been working closely with KIA to plan and execute this multimillion-dollar project.
