Whooping cough outbreak declared over in Kivalliq

The Department of Health has declared the outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in the Kivalliq region over.

The outbreak was originally declared in the Kivalliq on March 8, 2024, with active cases in Arviat and Rankin Inlet Between March 6 and July 23 there have been 32 cases identified in the Kivalliq region, including the Amaruq mine site.

After five weeks with no new cases reported, the office of the Chief Public Health Officer has declared the pertussis outbreak over.

Nunavummiut are reminded that the best way to prevent whooping cough and other vaccine-preventable illnesses is to ensure that their vaccines are up to date. Visit your local health centre to discuss your vaccine status.
