Traditional, Contemporary Learning Blend at Inuvialuit Youth Symposium
Youth from across the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR) came together last week in Inuvik for the Inuvialuit Youth Symposium to learn about the blending of traditional knowledge and contemporary ideas, with the goal of creating positive change in their home communities.

Named Hakuringniq Katillugu: Gathering Strength, the four-day long event provided youth in attendance with multiple learning opportunities and the space to make connections with others from the ISR.
Elders were present during the whole occasion, allowing first-hand learning of traditional knowledge. The youth also participated in interactive workshops, listened to special guest speakers – including Clarence Louie, the chief of the Osoyoos Indian Band and a member of the Order of Canada – and participated in on-the-land activities during an afternoon trip to Reindeer Station.
A special thank you goes to Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) staff, specifically Jennifer Rafferty and Leanna Steen, for planning, hosting and coordinating the symposium. IRC would also like to thank everyone who contributed in one way or another to the success of this event – including special guest speakers Terrance Allen, Lesa Semmler, Dez Loreen, and Eddie Dillon.
Youth and elders that participated include: Karlene Green, Barbara Archie, Stephanie Charlie, Jessi Pascal, Monica Jacobson, Shannon Green, Dennis Illisiak, Frank Green, Amber Ruben, Topsy Banksland, Stephanie Koadloak, Lena Nigiyok, Simon Kudlak, Carmella Klengenberg, Robert Kuptana, Agnes Kuptana, Jeffrey Amos, Rose Kirby, and Susan Peffer.
The Inuvialuit Youth Symposium was open to youth ages 19 to 29 and invited elders to attend to provide guidance and support. Th event was held from March 13 to 16, 2017 in Inuvik at Ingamo Hall.
Chief Clarence Louie’s presentation was recorded and is available to listen below. During his time with the youth, he stressed the importance of education and hard work.
