The QIA Board Approved Funds for the Affordable Housing Initiative

by ahnationtalk on October 4, 202381 Views

Iqaluit, Nunavut, October 3, 2023 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) General Meeting of Members took place today, and the Board is happy to announce new funding allocations for affordable housing projects in each Qikiqtani Community.  The funding allocations will be based on a percentage scale of total population in each community, broken down into five categories.

The total amount of funding for affordable housing will be approximately $152 million dollars ranging from $4.45 million for a communities like Grise Fiord or Kimmirut to a larger allocation of $17 million to communities like Igloolik and Pond Inlet.  Iqaluit will get the larges allocation based on the population of the whole Qikiqtani Region with about $41 million.

The funding comes from the distinctions-based allocation granted to Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) under Federal Budget 2022, and is distributed to the RIAs through the Infrastructure and Housing Advisory Committee, an NTI committee that looks at affordable housing options and social infrastructure in Nunavut.  This funding is intended to fill gaps between Social Housing, under the Nunavut Housing Corporation, and market-rate housing that tends to be out of reach for most working families.

The housing options will likely be built for single family detached, four-bedroom homes and semi-detached, three-bedroom homes.  The two styles of housing satisfied the guiding principle of Inuit specific housing as distinct from social housing, meaning there would be more usable land between home and family centered spaces.

The QIA General Meeting of members concluded today, but will continue meeting tomorrow with the Board of Directors tomorrow at the Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Space in Iqaluit
