Statement from Premier Silver on National Indigenous Peoples Day

by ahnationtalk on June 21, 202267 Views

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“I would like to wish all Yukoners a happy National Indigenous Peoples Day tomorrow. This is an important day for all of us to recognize and learn more about Indigenous cultures, arts, history and achievements.

“Yukon First Nations are celebrating many successes this year. The Ta’an Kwäch’än Council is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the signing of its self-government agreement. Earlier this year the Government of Yukon and the Chiefs Committee on Education announced the official establishment of the territory’s first ever First Nation School Board. A Letter of Agreement to establish an Interim Governance Committee for the First Nation School Board was signed on the 49th anniversary of Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow. Additionally, amendments to the Child and Family Services Act that were co-developed with Yukon First Nations were passed by the Yukon Legislative Assembly this spring.

“Our government is proud to celebrate these accomplishments with Yukon First Nations. We continue to work in partnership with First Nations to build healthy, strong, vibrant communities throughout the territory, and move forward on the path of reconciliation for the benefit of all Yukoners.

“I want to encourage all Yukoners to connect with their communities tomorrow and join the celebrations planned across the territory as we recognize First Nations and Indigenous groups from coast to coast to coast.”
