Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“Today I was honoured to meet with Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and His Excellency Mr. Whit Fraser as part of their first official visit to the Yukon. It was an opportunity to discuss important issues facing Northern communities, Yukoners and Yukon First Nations.

“We discussed the security of the Canadian Arctic and the importance of working together as northerners to address our unique challenges and create resilient, sustainable communities that foster the wellbeing of the people of the North.

“We agree that education is essential to building vibrant and thriving Northern communities.  The establishment of Yukon University, the first university in Canada’s North, is a positive step forward in expanding access to education in the North and providing unique educational experiences that meet the needs of northerners.

“We also shared our excitement about the Yukon hosting the 2022 Arctic Arts Summit.  The Arctic Arts Summit brings together artists and representatives from throughout the Circumpolar Region to showcase the rich and diverse artistry of the Arctic and is being hosted in Canada for the first time.

“My sincere thanks goes out to Their Excellencies for visiting the Yukon to share their support of high quality public service, education and the arts, and for their commitment to bringing Canadians together and upholding our system of responsible government.”
