Iqaluit, Nunavut, April 19, 2022. The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) has concluded funding installments with the Amaruq Hunters and Trappers Association (HTA) in Iqaluit.

These funds, totalling $100K, were dedicated to the purchase and distribution of country food to local community members, using money received from the Government of Canada’s Indigenous Community Support Fund (ICSF) during Iqaluit’s first COVID-19 outbreak in April of 2021.

The majority of the funding went directly local hunters and the payment for their harvests.  Approximately 10% of this funding went towards purchasing country food outside of Iqaluit, its cargo expenses and paid labour to package individual portions for distribution.

Country food was distributed widely to Iqalummiut during this time, at no cost to them and with free delivery offered to local elders that wished to receive country food packages.

This was organized, administered and distributed by the Amaruq HTA. QIA would like to thank Iqaluit’s Amaruq HTA and the local hunters that made this program a success.
