(June 16, 2015, Iqaluit, Nu) – The Government of Canada announced the establishment of the Qausuittuq National Park on June 16, 2015. This park is located north of Resolute Bay, Nunavut on Bathurst Island.

“I’m excited for the potential cultural and socio economic opportunities this will bring to Inuit and I look forward to going up to Resolute Bay to celebrate the event with the community. ” Says PJ Akeeagok, QIA

President.

The creation of the park will see financial, employment, and economic benefits as well as co-management through the Qausuittuq Joint Park Management Committee. Some of the benefits include the creation of jobs in the Qausuittuq Park, financial appropriations for tourism, and educational opportunities for the residents of Resolute Bay and Nunavummuit alike.

“I first became involved with the discussions of creating a park about 15 years and am proud to see what has come of it. The Park will protect an area that is important to Qausuitturmiut.” Says Paul Amagoalik, QIA Community Director of Resolute Bay.

The Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) outlining the benefits and opportunities arising from the new park is available on QIA’s website at www.qia.ca There will be further announcements regarding visits to Resolute Bay
