Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Supports Passage of Bill C-77 for Modern Treaty Implementation
(October 10, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated today expressed its support for the passage of Bill C-77, which received its first reading in the House of Commons today.
The Bill will create a new Agent of Parliament – a Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation. The Commissioners’ role will be to assess how the terms of Modern Treaties are being met – or not, as the case may be – and report to Parliament on its findings. The government will need to respond to these findings and work on improving its performance.
“Implementing the Nunavut Agreement is a critical means of ensuring reconciliation with Nunavut Inuit,” said Aluki Kotierk, President of NTI. “Through the years we have had to fight to see our Nunavut Agreement implemented as it was intended. It has taken years of negotiation and even long-drawn-out litigation to see parts of the Nunavut Agreement implemented,” she added.
NTI worked with Indigenous Modern Treaty Parties and Inuit organizations to establish an independent institution reporting directly to the Canadian Parliament and tasked to conduct independent, professional review of our Modern Treaties.
“We have been trying to get an institution like this established since 2003,” President Kotierk added. “It is an important accomplishment for Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Anandasangaree to have finally taken the step of introducing the necessary legislation in Parliament. We hope that the other political parties will support the legislation and ensure its speedy enactment. This is an important pathway towards reconciliation.”
