Provincial funding intended to go to hiring and retaining legal staff
The Government of Quebec has awarded $2.25 million over three years to Makivik Corp. to support Inuit justice initiatives in Nunavik.
The money will go toward hiring and retaining legal staff, according to a joint news release from Quebec’s Indigenous affairs minister and justice minister.
The funding includes $125,000 per year for retention of a justice services co-ordinator in Nunavik, $400,000 annually to hire four support staff at Makivik’s justice department, and $225,000 per year allocated to the hiring of two full-time Gladue report writers, to work with information gathered from elders, family and community members.
