Over the summer, the Department of Family Services (DFS) held stakeholder meetings and public consultations in seven Nunavut communities to identify actionable steps for the development of the Ilagiitsiarniq Strategic Plan. This Plan aims to improve existing protection and support services for families, youth, and children and was developed in response to the 2023 report by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

From June 15 to July 30, 2024, the meetings and consultations brought together 104 stakeholders, 248 community members, and 264 online survey responses from 21 communities.

DFS extends its gratitude to everyone who contributed to this important work. Your input has been invaluable in finalizing our strategic plan and setting priorities that address areas needing improvement and aligning with the safety and wellbeing of children, youth and families within Nunavut. The department is currently finalizing the Ilagiitsiarniq Strategic Plan and expects to release the report in Fall 2024. This report will include the feedback gathered during our engagement sessions and detail the department’s proposed actions in response to the input from Nunavummiut.
