The Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement, the largest land transfer in Canada’s history, was signed on January 18, 2024. The agreement grants Nunavut and its residents the authority to make decisions regarding public lands, freshwater, and non-renewable resources within the territory and, in turn, paves the way for the creation of Nunavut-based jobs, business opportunities, investments, and prosperity for generations to come.
Gowling WLG is pleased to highlight the role played by Adam Chamberlain, leader of the firm’s Canada North Group, and Chris Hummel, associate, in representing Nunavut in this landmark agreement.
Harnessing extensive experience and expertise in northern regulatory matters and the Nunavut Agreement (the modern land claim that led to the creation of Nunavut), Adam and Chris worked tirelessly to ensure the interests of the Government of Nunavut and Nunavummiut (Inuit and otherwise) were protected throughout the negotiation process. Their commitment to fostering positive relations and achieving mutually beneficial agreements was evident during the signing ceremony, where Adam was present alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Nunavut Premier PJ Akeeagok, NTI President Aluki Kotierk and Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal.
