Government of the Northwest Territories Supports Fire Evacuees with United Way Donation Matching Program
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) announced today its commitment to supporting fire evacuees from Hay River and K’atlodeeche First Nation through a donation matching program through the United Way NWT. The GNWT will match donations up to $150,000, providing critical assistance to those affected by the ongoing community evacuations.
Since the outbreak of fires near Hay River and K’atlodeeche First Nation, individuals and families have been forced to evacuate, resulting in widespread displacement. Acknowledging the urgency of the situation and the challenges faced by the affected communities, the GNWT is well prepared to assist those impacted by the fires and vows to support residents in the wake of this disaster.
In addition to the work being done to fight the fire and the support being provided to evacuees, the GNWT will match contributions made to the United Way NWT’s Wildfire Response campaign. Acting as a centralized hub, the United Way NWT collects donations and channels the funds to organizations directly engaged in providing aid to fire evacuees. Through this collaborative initiative, the GNWT seeks to extend support beyond its current resources, effectively addressing both the immediate and long-term needs of the affected communities.
