In response to the rising cost of living, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will be issuing an increase for all recipients of the Senior Home Heating Subsidy for 2023-24.

This one-time increase will provide an extra $65 to $175 per subsidy month depending on the community the senior lives in.

Seniors who have already been approved for 2023-24 do not need to re-apply for the increase; it will be issued directly to the heating supplier on record. Seniors who have not yet applied for the Senior Home Heating Subsidy are encouraged to apply now.

Enabling seniors to age in place is a priority of the 19th Legislative Assembly, and the Department of Education, Culture and Employment has committed to regularly reviewing the Senior Home Heating Subsidy.

Quote(s)

“This one-time increase to the Senior Home Heating Subsidy will assist seniors in heating their homes for the upcoming winter to help offset the cost of living while supporting the GNWT’s mandate commitment to enable seniors to age in place with dignity.”

– R.J. Simpson, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment

Quick facts

  • The Senior Home Heating Subsidy provides financial assistance to low-to-modest income seniors to assist with the cost of heating their homes. This program is a subsidy and not intended to cover all heating costs.
  • The GNWT also issued an additional payment for recipients of the subsidy in 2022-23.
  • Senior Home Heating Subsidy recently changed to ensure seniors receive assistance in the coldest months, September through April.  Seniors will be eligible for a monthly allotment, depending on their zone, during an eight-month period.
