GNWT increases fuel prices in 10 NWT communities to reflect rising global fuel prices

Retail fuel prices in 10 NWT communities have been increased by the Government of the Northwest Territories, effective today.

These price adjustments are entirely the result of market volatility and global increases in the cost of petroleum products, as well as associated increased freight costs. None of the additional costs associated with the Sachs Harbour air resupply following the cancelled marine resupply in October are included in these price changes.

The GNWT’s Department of Infrastructure manages the purchase, transportation, and storage of bulk petroleum products for 16 NWT communities that are not serviced by the private sector. Ten of those 16 communities receive fuel through the GNWT’s annual summer resupply program:

  • Łutsel K’e
  • Whatì
  • Wrigley
  • Jean Marie River
  • Fort Good Hope
  • Tulita
  • Tsiigehtchic
  • Ulukhaktok
  • Sachs Harbour
  • Paulatuk

The GNWT adjusts fuel prices at least twice per calendar year, after the summer barge resupply and after the winter road resupply. Some communities are resupplied year-round by all-season road.

Significant price changes are included in this update:

  • Heating fuel increases ranging from 3 to 70 cents per litre
  • Motive diesel increases ranging from 6 to 73 cents per litre
  • Gasoline increases ranging from 2 to 54 cents per litre

Similar increases in fuel prices are in effect for government and commercial customers in the 10 summer resupply communities.

The GNWT is required, under the NWT Revolving Funds Act, to set retail fuel prices at amounts that recover the full laid-in cost of fuel. This includes the wholesale purchase cost and all transportation costs, other than in exceptional circumstances like the Sachs Harbour air resupply.

More information, including up-to-date fuel prices in all communities serviced by the GNWT, can be found at www.inf.gov.nt.ca/en/services/fuel-services.
