The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce the inductees of the 2023 Northwest Territories (NWT) Education Hall of Fame.

Each of the inductees have made a strong and lasting impression on their colleagues, students and communities. These four deserving individuals and one organization/team have provided exemplary service to education in the NWT.

The 2023 inductees and their categories are*:

  • Charlene Liske – Community Outreach
  • Lima Baroryee – Early Childhood Education (nominated posthumously)
  • Alan Karasiuk – Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) Education
  • Colleen Eckert – Leadership in Education

The inductees were nominated by colleagues, students, education bodies and community members for the contributions they made to the field of education, creating safe and inclusive environments, empowering those around them, fostering a strong sense of community, demonstrating perseverance, supporting Indigenous teaching and learning and being a life-long learner.

The GNWT is honouring the 2023 inductees in a ceremony at the NWT Legislative Assembly on June 1. We congratulate them on their accomplishments and thank them for their contribution to Northwest Territories education.

Quote(s)

“Congratulations to the inductees of the 2023 NWT Education Hall of Fame. The commitment and dedication all the nominees have shown in their years of service are an inspiration. They are examples of the difference one person can make.

I would also like to recognize Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning – the Minister’s Choice recipient for 2023. Dechinta has redefined how many northerners are accessing post-secondary education in the North, and I thank everyone involved for the contributions they have made to the NWT education system and to the lives of students in the NWT. All the inductees will leave a lasting impact on the territory’s learners, educators and communities.”

– R. J. Simpson, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment
