The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has submitted the Developer’s Assessment Report for the Mackenzie Valley Highway Project to the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board (MVEIRB). The submission is a significant milestone in the Environmental Assessment (EA) process for this strategic infrastructure project and meets the Mandate commitment to advance the development of the Mackenzie Valley Highway.

The proposed project includes the construction of a two-lane all-season gravel highway extending from Hodgson Creek near Wrigley to Norman Wells through Tulita.  When completed, the project is intended to support an improved quality of life for residents in the Mackenzie Valley and to help grow and diversify the territorial economy.

Over the last several years, the GNWT has been working to collect the needed planning and technical information to satisfy the Terms of Reference for the project which were issued by the MVEIRB in 2015. The GNWT has also been engaging with Indigenous Governments, Indigenous organizations, municipal governments, non-governmental organizations and the public in the Sahtu and Dehcho Regions on this important project. The GNWT will continue engagement activities throughout the environmental assessment process.

The next step in the environmental assessment will include the MVEIRB posting the document for review to their Public Registry. The GNWT encourages all interested parties to review the documents posted to the registry and participate in the environmental assessment process.
