Boil Water Advisory – Hamlet of Igloolik
June 17, 2015
The Hamlet of Igloolik recently issued a boil water advisory, which remains in effect. The Nunavut Department of Health supports the boil water advisory.
Until further notice all residents of Igloolik must boil their water before consumption.
This is a precautionary measure based on low levels of water in the reservoir. The Department of Health is working with the Hamlet and the Department of Community and Government Services to fix the situation.
This week, the Department of Health became aware that some residents are collecting ice to use for drinking water. This source of drinking water should also be boiled.
During a boil water advisory, all water for consumption must be brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute.
It is essential that all water be boiled for:
preparing infant formulas;
preparing juices and ice cubes;
washing fruits and vegetables;
brushing of teeth.
Water can be boiled either in a pot or kettle on a stove, or in an electric kettle without an automatic shut-off.
