Statement from Minister Bennett on Nunavut Day 2018
From: Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada
Iqaluit, Nunavut (July 9, 2018) – The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett, issued the following statement today on the occasion of Nunavut Day:
“Today on Nunavut Day, we mark the 25th anniversary of Parliament passing the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act, creating Canada’s newest territory and forever changing the map of Canada.
I am honoured to be in Iqaluit to celebrate this major milestone in the history of Nunavut and of Canada with Deputy Premier of Nunavut David Akeeagok, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated President Aluki Kotierk and all residents of Nunavut.
Over the past 25 years, Nunavut has played a vital role in shaping the future for our country. The people of Nunavut have and continue to make an invaluable contribution to the social, cultural and economic development of Northern Canada.
No one knows the North better than Northerners. That is why the Government of Canada is committed to giving Nunavummiut a greater say over their own future and putting decision making on lands and resources in the hands of the people closest to the land.
This past January, I met with the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated to renew our commitment to work closely to improve the lives and well-being of Nunavummiut and build on the successes of the past 25 years. The collaboration and cooperation between all three parties has been and will continue to be fundamental to realizing the enormous potential of the next 25 years and beyond.
As we celebrate Nunavut Day, let’s reflect on the important relationship and history that we share as we move forward together in building a bright and prosperous future for Nunavut and Canada.
Congratulations to all Nunavummiut on this major milestone in the history of our country. Happy Nunavut Day!”
