Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Announces Appointment of Acting Languages Commissioner of Nunavut
IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 11, 2019) – Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Simeon Mikkungwak today announced that Ms. Karliin Aariak has been appointed Acting Languages Commissioner of Nunavut. The appointment is effective October 21, 2019.
Under the Official Languages Act, the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut is appointed by the Commissioner on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly. The Management and Services Board of the Legislative Assembly may recommend the appointment of an Acting Languages Commissioner when the office is vacant and the House is not sitting. The previous incumbent, Ms. Helen Klengenberg, resigned from office in September 2019.
Speaker Mikkungwak said, “Ms. Aariak’s professional background, which includes positions in both the Office of the Languages Commissioner and the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit, makes her well-suited to taking on these important responsibilities.”
