Seventeen Infrastructure Projects in Yukon Get Joint Government Funding
Projects approved under the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund
July 26, 2016, Whitehorse, Yukon
Providing community residents and businesses with modern, reliable and sustainable public infrastructure opens doors to good jobs, helps create economic growth and foster a strong middle class, and provides opportunities for a better quality of life to everyone.
Soon, residents in communities across Yukon will benefit from newly approved infrastructure investments. Collectively, the projects contribute to clean and reliable drinking water, environmental protection through more effective and efficient wastewater treatment, as well as improved roads and bridges.
The governments of Canada and Yukon today announced a total of over $78 million in joint funding for the projects, which will contribute to clean growth and help meet the communities’ current and future needs. Of this, the Government of Canada will provide $58,596,772 through the Small Communities Fund for the 17 projects and the Government of Yukon will contribute funding to cover any remaining costs.
Once complete, the projects will significantly improve community and territorial infrastructure and promote economic growth that will help the middle class and those trying to join it to prosper and enjoy a better quality of life. The Government of Yukon is taking advantage of a new streamlined project approval process that will allow the approved projects to get underway during this construction season.
Through the Small Communities Fund, the governments of Canada and Yukon will continue to work in partnership to fund priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs in communities across the territory.
