WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon tabled amendments to the Oil and Gas Act in the Yukon legislature today.

“This process is the latest step in our continued efforts to provide clarity, stability and certainty in the responsible management of oil and gas resources,” Minister of Energy Mines and Resources Scott Kent said. “These legislative revisions ensure Yukon remains able to attract and retain industry interest while strengthening the Yukon government’s ability to protect people and the environment.”

Some of the proposed amendments include extending the term of a permit, and clarifying well abandonment and re-abandonment requirements and procedures.

The tabling of amendments to the Oil and Gas Act follows a 60-day consultation period from July to September 2015. The discussion document presented for public review outlined prospective policy issues and asked a series of questions. Overall, the input received during the consultation indicated support for the majority of the proposed changes.

“These amendments allow the Yukon government to continue in its commitment to improve transparency while ensuring Yukon residents and First Nations continue to benefit from the oil and gas sector’s growth opportunities,” Kent added.
