Paulatuk RCMP host bingo and support Seniors and Elders during COVID-19
May 29, 2020
A radio bingo and packs filled with essential items brought joy to Elders and Seniors in the hamlet of Paulatuk on Wednesday, May 27th.
Paulatuk RCMP, in partnership with the Hamlet of Paulatuk, launched an initiative to provide “Healthy Living Packs” to Elders and Seniors.
Through an application to United Way NWT, Paulatuk RCMP received $5000 to offer support to Elders and Seniors during COVID-19 pandemic.
The money was used to prepare 60 healthy food packs containing items such as bread, coffee, eggs, fruit, soup and healthy snacks. Five themed packs were also prepared: Baking Pack, Fishing Pack, On the Land Pack, Toiletries Pack and Sewing Pack. These packs were filled with different gifts depending on type of pack: fishing rods, tarp, reusable cups, utensils, matches, gloves, needles, embroidery threads and fur, etc.
On Wednesday, May 27th, Paulatuk RCMP delivered the healthy food packs to participating Elders and Seniors in the community and hosted a “Boost your Spirits Radio Bingo”. The five themed packs were awarded and the Jackpot winner received a $200 gift card from the Northern Store.
“Paulatuk RCMP are working with the community to lift each others’ spirits during this time, and to support our Elders and Seniors. With one initiative, we were able to promote on the land experiences to harvest traditional food, provide a bingo activity during an isolated time, and boost mental health” states Cpl. Cara Streeter, Detachment Commander of Paulatuk RCMP.
Paulatuk RCMP would like to thank its partners the Hamlet of Paulatuk, the Northern Store, United Way NWT, the Government of Canada and New Horizon’s Seniors Program, for making this initiative possible.
