New Detachment Commander for Watson Lake RCMP

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Yukon is pleased to announce the selection of a new Detachment Commander for Watson Lake Detachment.

Following a selection process that included input from local partners, Sergeant Kent Langley was chosen as the Detachment Commander for Watson Lake RCMP.

Sergeant Langley is originally from Mississauga, Ontario, and joined the RCMP in 1990. He spent the first part of his career in British Columbia, starting with Port Alberni, and then on to Dease Lake and Kamloops. Most recently, he was posted in Ontario.

“Watson Lake is the largest RCMP detachment outside of Whitehorse,” says Acting District Police Officer Brad Kaeding. “The role of RCMP detachment commanders in all Yukon communities includes managing and leading the detachment, and working closely with community leaders and partners to identify and address priorities for the community. We are pleased to welcome Kent to the team.”

Sgt. Langley comes to M division with a varied skillset, including front-line community policing, covert counter-terrorism work around the world with the Air Marshals program, national security, recruiting, marine border enforcement, and peacekeeping in Africa. He has also done relief duty in two northern communities, Taloyoak and Kimmirut, both in Nunavut.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have a wide range of duties during my policing career,” said Sergeant Langley. “Living and working in the Yukon is something I’ve always wanted to do. My wife and I are looking forward to making the most of our experience here.”

Sgt. Langley and his spouse Nadine arrived in Watson Lake last week. They have two adult children who are attending university in Ontario. His first official day at the Watson Lake detachment was Monday, October 2nd.

Sgt. Langley replaces Sgt. Cam Lockwood who retired in the Spring of 2017 after 20 years of service with the RCMP.

The Yukon RCMP management team wishes to thank Cpl. Jason Stewart as well as Reserve Cst. Don Rogers for their leadership at Watson Lake detachment over the past several months as well as the Watson Lake detachment members for carrying on their community policing work during the period of transition.
