WHITEHORSE— Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent and key representatives of Yukon’s mineral sector attended the 2015 Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference (EMMC) this week in Halifax.

“The Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference is an important national gathering where governments discuss and collaborate on leading issues such as innovation, best practices and how we can shape the future of Canada’s energy and mining sectors,” Kent said. “Our work together in the forum allows us to learn from each other, coordinate efforts and share information.”

Brad Thrall, president of the Yukon Chamber of Mines, Mark Ayranto, chair of the Yukon Minerals Advisory Board, and Samson Hartland, executive director of the Yukon Chamber of Mines attended with Minister Kent.

“Yukon is endowed with world-class geology, and discussions with industry colleagues and governments about how we can enable those opportunities in remote and northern Canada were informative and useful,” Hartland said. “While Yukon has its own set of opportunities and challenges, it’s important that we take the time to learn from one another’s experiences and expertise at EMMC.”

Yukon presented several initiatives at the 2015 conference, including mining regulatory reform, energy generation initiatives, and an approach to develop an oil and gas industry in the territory.

The Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference is an annual gathering of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for energy and mining portfolios. At these meetings, ministers discuss shared priorities for collaborative action to advance energy and mining development across the country.
