The 30th anniversary of the IRC Native Hockey Tournament made for an exciting weekend, right from first puck drop to the tightly-contested A Division final between K & D Outlaws and Malena Selects.
Players and fans from across the western Arctic travelled to Inuvik, hoping their team could claim the title in their respective divisions – but also to have fun, visit friends and family, and take part in the new cultural activities that coincided with the tournament.
In the A Division, K & D Outlaws held off a hungry Malena Selects. A tie game going into the final minutes of regulation, Malena thought they had taken the lead before their goal was overturned by the referee. The call seemed to spark their opponents, and with just over one-minute left to play K & D scored the eventual game-winner to put themselves ahead 6-5.
Individual award winners in the A Division were:
Most Valuable Player – Elton Ruben
Top Scorer – Sean Poitras
Top Goalie – Mitchell Jacobson
