Today you will have heard that Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC) and Makivik Corporation (Makivik) have agreed to merge Canadian North and First Air. This merger comes after years of negotiations and only after long discussions between both ownership groups. Throughout the process IDC sought to both protect and enhance the benefits offered to you, and today we are proud to announce some of the benefits that will become available through this merger.

Learn more about the merger

During the Merger

  • Priority will be given to Inuit beneficiaries during any hiring and synergy discussions that may occur.
  • All benefits currently available to beneficiaries (PIVUT, Donations, Bereavement fares will continue to apply).

Immediately After the Merger

  • Daily jet service to Inuvik will continue including continued ability to haul cargo sufficient to meet local demand.
  • Beneficiaries will be part of the new PIVUT fare system, which will see uniform discounts throughout the new, larger network. We expect some exciting new changes to PIVUT, which will be announced as we get closer to the merger.
  • Regional ticket and other donations to various causes will continue.
  • Additional training and opportunities will be made available through annual recruitment events held in Inuvik. This is a continuation of IDC’s focus on providing a path to employability for our youth.

In the Near Future

  • We are expecting the merger to further enhance safety by enabling newer aircraft across the network, as well as specialization in maintenance of B737 and ATR aircraft.

The IDC board is focused on making sustainable profits while supporting growth and development of our beneficiaries. We feel that this merger will provide benefits well into the future.
