A fire burning through most of the night at the Kugaardjuq School, the only school in the Nunavut community, has been extinguished.
Of the 972 residents, 331 are under age 14.
One resident, Alex Ningark, said the fire started sometime around 10 p.m. Tuesday. The gymnasium, reception area, and high school portion of the school are destroyed and the elementary section is also damaged, he said.
“I am devastated because I have an eight- and 12-year-old in Grade 2 and Grade 7. My daughter works there and does the breakfast program.”
