IQALUIT, Nunavut _ A Nunavut politician says the territory isn’t doing enough to protect children being given to new parents under the practice of custom adoption.

Cathy Towtongie says adoptive parents can get Inuit babies without undergoing criminal record or background checks.

She says the approach is contributing to the high rate of sexual abuse of children in the territory.

The territory’s family services minister says the government has to balance protecting children while ensuring there aren’t too many barriers to traditional adoptions.

Custom adoption refers to a child being placed privately with non-biological parents, usually an extended family member.

Almost all adoptions in Nunavut are custom adoptions.

Reports detailing problems date back to 2003, but the territory hasn’t implemented any of their recommendations.
