Are you a motivated professional with knowledge of policy development and experience in team leadership? Consider this exciting opportunity with the Strategic and Indigenous Policy Branch, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, where you will contribute to Indigenous policy planning and development.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• participate in the development of program initiatives and policies relating to natural resource use/access for Indigenous people
• interpret ministry policy and recommend solutions to contentious issues and problems, and lead reviews and negotiations
• provide expert analysis and advice on complex policy issues regarding land claims, natural resources and Indigenous policies
• plan, coordinate and lead small groups of policy, program, legal and analytical professionals and represent the ministry on ministry/inter-ministry committees, natural resource programs and working groups related to Aboriginal policy issues

How do I qualify?

Knowledge:

  • You have a broad knowledge of natural resource management, Indigenous studies and/or Indigenous law for Indigenous policy planning and development.
    • You have a thorough understanding and experience in policy development and decision-making processes, methodologies, Indigenous history, cultures and treaties to develop policy instruments including Cabinet submissions, legislation/regulations, policy guidance, briefing materials, correspondence.

Leadership and interpersonal skills:

  • You have proven team leadership skills to coordinate and encourage participant involvement in policy development initiatives.
    • You have sound political acuity to understand the contextual circumstances/environment surrounding proposals, initiatives and issues and to assess their potential implications.
    • You have relationship management skills and diplomacy to liaise with representatives of First Nations, Metis and Indigenous organizations and other groups including media and the public.
    • You have facilitation skills to identify options and find common ground on issues and differences of opinions.

Communication skills:

  • You have well developed verbal communication skills to converse effectively with a wide variety of contacts and stimulate discussions.
    • You can effectively write briefing notes and submission documents.
    • You have good presentation skills to conduct briefings for senior staff.

Analytical and problem-solving skills:

  • You have the ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies and procedures to provide advice on policy planning and development.
    • You have demonstrated analytical, negotiation and problem-solving skills to provide clear and objective policy advice.
    • You have demonstrated organizational skills, the ability to work in a fast paced team work environment and are proficient at resolving issues and mitigating risks.

Salary Range: $68,536 – $100,994 per year
